1000 PARTICIPANTS RAISE $2.1 MILLION IN THE WEEKEND TO END BREAST CANCER BENEFITING Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation
(OTTAWA, June 7) On National Cancer Survivor Day, the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation is thrilled to announce that 1000 participants raised $2.1 million in the fourth annual Weekend to End Breast Cancer. Over the last four years, more than $8 million has been raised to help fight breast cancer and now gynecological cancers by financing critical research and improving care for cancer patients throughout Eastern Ontario. The annual 60 km walk continues to help more people survive cancer and is changing what it means to be diagnosed with the disease. There is hope! The fifth annual Weekend to End Breast Cancer benefiting the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation will be held June 5-6, 2010!
Following the emotional opening ceremonies yesterday at Rockcliffe Landing, walkers embarked upon a scenic route through the streets of Ottawa. At the end of their first day, they arrived at a “Tent City” where they took warm showers, ate hot meals and relaxed. Hundreds of Volunteers and Crew Members have been on location to provide support over the course of the two day event. This group has helped serve meals, staffed water and snack stops, provided gear transport, portable restrooms, and comprehensive medical services.
“The Weekend to End Breast Cancer has been one of the best experiences of my life and definitely one of the most worthwhile,” explains Astrid Arysian, a two-year walker. “As a breast cancer survivor, I wanted to give back to the medical community who cared for me and ensured my well being during the most difficult time of my life. I was very grateful for all the support I received. I will walk again next year to ensure that future generations never have to hear the words 'you have cancer'. I am proof that the Weekend to End Breast Cancer helps save lives!” With one in nine Canadian women being diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime and more than 8,000 new cases of gynecological cancers diagnosed in 2007; the time to act is now! The Weekend to End Breast Cancer benefits the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation. The Cancer Foundation is committed to increasing cancer survivorship in Eastern Ontario and is the only local charitable organization dedicated exclusively to cancer. Working to fill the gaps in services for cancer patients, the Cancer Foundation has partnered with 11 local hospitals to ensure residents have the best possible care close to their homes, shorter wait times, improved quality of life and access to the latest new therapies. Locally, researchers are investigating better ways to treat breast cancer, including targeted treatments that minimize the negative side effects while still effectively combating a patient’s cancer. The Cancer Foundation and its partners are learning more about how to predict and prevent breast cancer and gynecological cancer. Put together, this research is bringing us closer every day to an end to women’s cancers.

1000 PARTICIPANTS RAISE $2.1 MILLION IN THE WEEKEND TO END BREAST CANCER BENEFITING Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation
(OTTAWA, June 6) The Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation was pleased to announce earlier today that 1000 participants raised $ 2.1 million in the fourth annual Weekend to End Breast Cancer. With an expanded mandate this year, the annual 60 km walk now seeks to fight all women’s cancers, step by step. To date, the event has been able to raise over $8 million. These monies continue to finance critical research, treatment and care for breast cancer. It now also supports initiatives to fight gynecological cancers such as uterine, ovarian and endometrial cancers. The fifth annual Weekend to End Breast Cancer benefiting the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation will be held June 5-6, 2010!
An emotional Opening Ceremony at Rockcliffe Landing launched this hope-filled weekend. Tonight, walkers will gather at Rockcliffe Landing for a night of camping under the stars. The memorable Closing Ceremony tomorrow afternoon is a symbolic gesture made by walkers, friends and family that reinforces their triumph over women’s cancers.
“As a participant, I fully understand how walking 60 km can sometimes be challenging,” explains Linda Eagan, President and CEO of the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation. “However, it pales in comparison to the immense emotional and physical struggle that cancer entails. Nonetheless, all those taking part in this event are true heroes. The Weekend has a simple goal: to end cancer. Special thanks to our walkers, volunteers, sponsors, donors and the community, we’re getting there!” “It’s incredible how the Weekend to End Breast Cancer continues to positively impact Ottawa and the surrounding areas. Not only have we been able to fund five times the amount of breast cancer research, but the monies raised have also allowed us to promote early detection through education initiatives, finance a new molecular laboratory that is performing research into personalized cancer treatments, extend our services and continue to offer the best cancer care throughout the region,” states Dr. Ian Lorimer, Senior Scientist at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute. “Help us pursue our research projects and bring us closer to eliminating women’s cancers.”
