Your Dollars at Work

The Bigger and Bolder Weekend

We have some very exciting news to share about The Weekend to End Breast Cancer benefiting the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation.  Our epic journey is becoming even bigger and bolder after listening to you.  Some of you have been asking why just breast cancer?  The answer has been simple.  Breast cancer impacts 1 in 9 women in their lifetime and that number is just too high. But new research is starting to find links between breast and gynecological cancers.  In Canada, in 2007 there were over 8,000 new cases of women’s cancers including cervical, endometrial, and ovarian.  Funding for these cancers is now also critical to our fight.  So why not expand the power of The Weekend to include all women’s cancers?  With the dollars you raise during The Weekend, these numbers can be lowered, and one day eliminated.

It’s important to be clear on this point, though.  Your donor dollars will continue to exclusively fund breast cancer research, treatment, and care and your Weekend will be the same amazing event it has always been.  Only now, new registrants will be able to choose the destination of their donor funds: breast cancer or other women’s cancers.

Supporting the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation

Thank you for your fundraising efforts! You are among Ottawa’s brave and dedicated people who will make your mark in the fight against this disease, and improve the lives of thousands upon thousands in Eastern Ontario. The dollars you have raised are helping us pursue our mission to end breast cancer and other women's cancers. Make no mistake about it your fundraising efforts are very valuable in supporting research, treatment and care throughout our region.

The Ottawa Hospital Regional Cancer Centre, the Ottawa Health Research Institute, the Queensway Carleton Hospital and regional cancer delivery agencies all benefit and are grateful for the money you have raised. As the region’s largest foundation raising funds for cancer, the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation utilizes funds from The Weekend to carry out breakthrough initiatives. This includes a new laboratory that will bring an innovative dimension to breast cancer patient care through “personalized cancer treatment.” It will be the first of its kind in Canada and will be up and running in the next few months.

Looking to the future, we have a vision. A vision that includes increasing capacity, to ensure that timely access to cancer care and treatment is available to those you know and love as close to home as possible, should it be required. Expansion of regional cancer services is a priority as is funding innovative breast cancer research and improving treatment techniques. You are making this vision a reality — thank you so much for all your hard work!
